Early Morning Butt Pains

Last night when I was thinking about what I was going to write, I thought that I would take a cue from my father and talk about how much I have been farting lately. I am not sure what was in my aunt's cooking, but I have been like an aromatherapy candle for killing roaches! Hopefully, her cooking will be out of my system soon and I can go back to being regular.

However, this morning my alarm went off at 5:20am~ a full hour earlier than I usually wake to get to the gym. I had told my workout buddy that since I had missed the gym yesterday, I would make it up to her by getting up early to make it to the cycle/spin class. There is a special room at the gym with bikes in a circle and fans. Prior to this morning, I just walked by and glanced in~ silently vowing that I would not enter.  People had warned me that my butt would be sore and that I would want to quit, but I should aim to stay on the bike.  All of those things happened. I got there early to sign in and my friend and I got bikes next to each other. She was giving me a pep talk about taking it easy and remembering to stay at my own pace.  I was the youngest person in the class and the other people were buff!! The class began and it was true that I thought I was not going to survive.  At one point my water bottle fell out of my hands and I needed to retrieve it which had me off my bike for about a minute.  Other than that, I kept moving and even when I could not do all the fancy tricks; I tried and survived.

In my workout regiment I have noticed that the harder I am working and/or gasping for air and/or feeling like I am going to pass out, the more that I fart.  I noticed it this morning because toward the end of the class, when I thought things could not get worse--- I let about three rip. I don't think anyone heard because the music was blaring and the smell went away in about ten seconds. Still, I have to wonder if the sudden coughing was a result of me.

My experience has made me curious~ does working out cause farting? How do you handle it in the gym environment? Even outside the gym, how do you deal with the gassy surprises?

oh gosh, gassy surprises. i'm going to ask morgan to read this one, because he and i are fart buddies and he'll like it! {sorry morgan for when you read this comment - i gave away our little secret}

first of all, mad props to you for going to the spin class!!! i have only seen people doing it, and always with a look of awe and horror that i can already feel the pain, only be watching. i am extremely proud of you for going, and sticking with it!!!

back to farting... i used to get farty in yoga class. but i think it kind of depended on what my diet had been like lately (so yes, your aunt's cooking could be contributing) and how soon before class i had eaten. since i've been going to the gym once a week, i'm not noticing any gassiness urges.

i'm sure you could find some research that's been done!

The "morning constitutional" works!! People take walks to get their innards moving. There's no reason other activities won't do the same.... Maybe you are gas-powered for much less than $2 per gallon.

Crissy and Morgan (for when you read this)~ how long did it take for you to discover that you were farting buddies? Also, how long before going to the gym would you eat to either increase gassiness or decrease gassiness?
ErinB: Thanks for the input. Is there anything to prevent of lessen the amount of innard movement?

Timing of eating might help - not too close to the public work-out. Beano works for some people. See package instructions. Watch excessive intake of beans, cruciferous veggies (like broccoli and relatives), and carbohydrates in general. Some people do fine with these foods; others do not. Then, enjoy the movement. Be glad you are not stopped up. On average, an individual passes gas 16-17 times per 24 hour period. Women do so more than men, contrary to some popular opinion. And, finally, you might have officially joined the ranks of the old, albeit earlier than I would have predicted, who are obsessed with bodily functions because the quality of life decreases when they are altered .

I think it is the crucefierous veggies. On the other hand, maybe I should start tracking how many times I pass gass in a day because I don't remember it being so high before. This is very interesting and informative.

I'm so uptight. I can't believe you all are casually talking about passing gas! LOL.

Christine: I think it helps to talk about it now, in order to prevent future embarassment.

JC! You are sooo silly!!

I never would have pegged you for a fart girl! Not that I thought you didn't fart, because if you didn't, that would be really unhealthy, but that you openly talk about your fart concerns.

FART ON, GIRL! FART ON!

what are cruciferous veggies?

when morgan and i are on the beans and rice diet, we're eating beans, rice, yogurt, and raw veggies (tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, cabbage, etc.). we eat this once or twice a day, and we don't get farty.

BUT, when we eat lentil soup everyday like we did last week, made of lentils, and veggies that have been cooking for hours together, we get farty.

i think it's the bean/veg cooked together combination.

when i go to yoga class or exercise in the morning, i don't normally like to eat beforehand. but if i do, it's usually 30-60 min. beforehand.

and to answer your first question, it took morgan and i probably 3 or 4 years to become farting buddies. i think, correct me if i'm wrong morgan.

{morgan has not read this yet, i forgot to tell him, but yes, when i told him what i'd written, he was a little appalled that i'd shared this information.}

If my husband and I didn't talk about farting and bodily functions, that would eliminate twenty percent of our conversations.
