After ranting and raving in my Sunday Salon post yesterday, I finished  House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III. In a nutshell, the book is about the Behrani family who buys a house that is incorrectly placed for auction. The former owner, Kathy Nicolo has been wrongfully evicted. She tries to get her house back. In the process, she enlists the help of a police offier named Lester with whom she has sexual relations. Both of them harass the Behrani family.

Yesterday, I talked about some of the reasons I was annoyed by two of the characters, Kathy and Lester.   As I finished the book, I felt even more frustrated (even though I did not think that was possible).  While I do not believe that Behrani was blameless, I still feel that Kathy and Lester really screwed things up.   The end of the book was not very satisfying.  I found it to be over dramatic and again felt frustrated.  I think that the whole situation could have been avoided by responsible behavior. 

On the positive side, I did appreciate how the author captured the formal English language of Mr. and Mrs. Behrani.  I also thought that the author captured Kathy's desperation very well.
