The Sunday Salon #21: Persepolis

The Sunday Salon.com

I am very slow with completing books this semester SUMMER , so I thought that it would be fun to have a progress report of my reading. This is an online reading group where all the participants set aside time to read every Sunday and blog about the experience.

This morning, I continued reading Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi which I started when I returned to Seattle on Thursday night. I was having trouble sleeping and decided to start this novel which is the selection for the Inside Cover.  It is my first graphic novel and I really like the format.  The story is told from the perspective of a young girl who is learning the purpose of the revolution in Iran.  I am not a graphic novel expert, but I am enjoying the style of drawings and the ease with which I am reading.  The author captures people's facial expressions and the non-verbals add an additional tool to the story telling.

In addition to reading Persepolis for an online book club discussion, I am also reading the book for the Orbis Teeravm Challenge

This week, I also finished reading White Oleander by Janet Finch. I had talked about it on last week's Sunday Salon. I will write a full review shortly.

I loved Persepolis (just read it last week) and am set to read Persipolis 2 next week. I also have the movie here, hope to watch it soon. I'm pretty new to graphic novels too - I wrote about it in last week's Sunday Salon: http://teelgee7.blogspot.com/2008/08/sunday-salon-camping-out.html

Enjoy your weekend!

Coincidentally there was a discussion about this book on the radio this afternoon. The presenter was making the point that had this been published as a standard novel (i.e. without the graphics) it might well have offended a lot of people and caused a great deal of trouble. She felt that it was the graphics that actually set the tone and made the 'message' acceptable. What do you think?

I enjoyed Persepolis very much. If you are looking for another graphic novel, you should check out The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman. Very, very good.

I really want to read Persepolis, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I also was a big fan of White Oleander, but I haven't read it for a few years now.

I got the two Persepolis books out of the library about a month ago. My wife read both, but I have yet to read them...maybe this is just the prompt I need to read them. Thanks.

It's been years since I read White Oleander when I was in high school...I'll be looking forward to your review as a refresher...maybe I'll put it on that ever-growing re-read list I'm working on.
Terri: I agreed with everything you wrote about Persepolis. I hope that you enjoy the movie!

Ann: I think that the graphics do help set the tone and allow the author to say many controversial things in an unoffensive way.

Carrie K.: Thank you for the recommendation.

S.Krishna: You should certainly move Persepolis up in your to-read list.

Bethany: I am so excited to be a winner!

Unfinished Person: I am glad that I was able to encourage you to read this great book!

Rebecca: I am trying to motivate to write the review. Hopefully, I will post it soon.
