What was the most unusual (for you) book you ever read? Either because the book itself was completely from out in left field somewhere, or was a genre you never read, or was the only book available on a long flight… whatever? What (not counting school textbooks, though literature read for classes counts) was furthest outside your usual comfort zone/familiar territory?

And, did you like it? Did it stretch your boundaries? Did you shut it with a shudder the instant you were done? Did it make you think? Have nightmares? Kick off a new obsession?

The first selection for the Atlanta book club was Fast Food Nation.  At the time, I was not excited to read the book because I did not think that it would be interesting or engaging.  For the first 100 pages or so, I was worried that I would not finish the book.  However, as I went along, I realized that I was learning a lot and that getting informed about the fast food industry is really important.  The book did stretch my boundaries and got me more excited about reading non-fiction materials.  Since then, I have picked up other "heavier" non-fiction books and had some great discussions.   I think that the book kicked off a new obsession with learning about topics that I previously felt intimidated or daunted by.
