The Sunday Salon #3

The Sunday Salon.com

I am very slow with completing books this semester, so I thought that it would be fun to have a progress report of my reading.  This is an online reading group where all the participants set aside time to read every Sunday and blog about the experience.  I continued reading the book that I started last week.

Today, I had a LONG traveling day from Durham to Seattle. The one thing this is good for is reading.  In between naps, I read a few more essays in Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant.  One of my favorite themes that emerged from the essays I read today was about how feeding yourself is an extension of self-care.

"But nothing quite fills me up like taking care of myself, taking care of my desires." ~ page 176

"I always learned something about stillness and attention and self-care when I was around her." ~ page 184

Trying to eat in an airport is quite a challenge because you are faced with limited options and often limited time.  Still, you are in good company if you are eating alone.  Many people are solo travelers and it is not hard to sit by yourself and enjoy a meal, if you choose.  Today, I was tired and running late.  I grabbed a sandwich and sprinted to my connection.  On the plane, I ate my sandwich and read the essays. It made me feel like I was practicing good self-care by getting a relatively healthy sandwich and eating on the plane instead of waiting until I landed to eat with a friend.

Another North Carolinian?!This is the first time I've dropped by your blog, but I've enjoyed your post, so I'm sure I'll be back. I haven't read the particular book you're referring to, but I've heard good things about it. It needs a place on my stacks with some of my other foodie memoirs and essay collections, for sure!

Like you, I frequently travel alone (from California to the Philippines and back, twice a year), and I enjoy the solitude of it. Reading a book and being alone with everybody is an oddly comforting feeling. :)

Great journal. I'm sure I'll be back to visit. :)

Thank you so much Chayenne. In some situations, it is the more of the norm to be alone than in other situations.
