Super Bad
My high school experience was spent trying to do normal social activities and fighting with my parents about having to go to the Gurdwara. The quest for alcohol and sex were not part of my high school experience. The movie Super Bad was a good educational experience for me. I went with G-love, H, and B on my last night in Atlanta. We were laughing very hard. I wish that I had a rewind button, so that I could capture the exact language of the kids. Afterwards, we were all quoting the movie to each other. It was a great way to end my time in Atlanta--- laughing in the dark with good friends.
Which Screen? Either one is fine. The jokes are sexually explicit, but the friendship is moving.
Love Don't Cost a Thing
I seem to be developing an appetite for guilty pleasures; as I try to eat healthier, I am finding that my consumption of books and movies is going downhill. This movie is a remake of Can't Buy Me Love. There are a few updates in Love Don't Cost A Thing. Here are few that I noticed:
1. The Dorky guy is a pool boy, not a lawn boy.
2. The popular girl is not a cheerleader, but on a dance squad.
3. There is incorrect instruction on how to put on a condom.
4. I did not understand a lot of the slang. This was especially tragic given that I pride myself on being hip and happening.
Overall, there were no surprises in the movie. It was okay, but not something that required my full attention.
Which Screen? Small, but you could live a full life without viewing this movie.
Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix
I was glad that the non-conformist had not see the newest HP movie because I had someone to accompany me. While I was glad to see the movie on the big screen, I felt sad at how many things were left out. I know that it is impossible to capture all the nuisances and sub-plots, but I wanted to see more things developed on the big screen. If I had not read the books, I probably would have thought it was a decent movie. I think my enjoyment of the films is tied in large part to my appreciation of the books. Given the time and space limits, I thought that the movie was okay.
Which Screen: Big screen to fully appreciate the special effects. Small screen if that does not do it for you.
Mean Girls
Since I was hung over, I thought that I could have an easy night with mindless entertainment. Fortunately, the non-conformist was able to come over to hang out :) We decided to watch Mean Girls. When this movie first came out, I read an interview with Tina Fey which piqued my curiosity about the movie. I found it very entertaining. There were many funny moments which reminded me of the law school environment. Plus, Claudia Salinger is in it.
Which Screen? Either one. You will probably have to settle for the small screen since it is no longer playing in theaters.
